On September 10, 2024, we had the honor of participating in the event “Creative -Action-Research: Innovating Together,” organized by the Swiss platform dedicated to action research. For this edition, our director, Federico Varrasso, was invited as the keynote speaker. His intervention provided valuable insights into the importance of creative and participatory action research in addressing contemporary challenges.

Federico Varrasso shared his expertise by emphasizing the power of creative and artistic processes in this type of research, which aims to bridge research and action on the ground while involving stakeholders throughout creative enactments. He highlighted how Participatory Visual Methods, such as those we employ, facilitate dialogue between stakeholders—whether local communities, audiences of diverse sociocultural and socio-educational backgrounds, or experts — making visible issues that are often difficult to engage with otherwise. These methods were presented as key tools for co-constructing solutions that are both tailored and rooted in the realities of the field.

The event brought together researchers, practitioners, and civil society actors, all sharing a common goal: innovating together to transform social practices. The discussions, rich and dynamic, illustrated how collaboration between researchers and communities can lead to tangible results and real change.

Our director’s participation as keynote speaker reinforced the idea that creative and participatory action research, when conducted effectively, can become a powerful driver of social transformation.
